General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery Surgery University departments Medical University of Graz

Research

The Division of General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery explores all visceral surgery areas of specialization such as hepatobiliary surgery, pancreatic surgery, endocrinology, colorectal surgery and upper gastrointestinal tract surgery in basic research and health services research.

New surgical techniques are evaluated including telesurgery and surgical robots, which following close critical review in controlled studies should result in pioneering surgical procedures.

Improvement of pre- and perioperative management

The scientific assessment of liver cell metabolism through measurement of liver function according to the influence of free O2 radicals was able to significantly improve pre- and perioperative patient management.

Clear quality improvement

In the area of surgical gastroenterology, a large number of studies that employ surgical endoscopy have led to a clear quality improvement both in the routine treatment of gastrointestinal diseases and in the management of problem cases or emergencies.
